Types of Coverage

HO-1 - Basic Form

Basic form of homeowners insurance that financially protects the structure of your home against:

  • Fire or Smoke
  • Riots/Civil Commotion
  • Aircraft Damage
  • Automobile Damage
  • Explosions
  • Lightning
  • Hail and the Wind
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
HO-2 - Broad Form

HO-2 policies cover not just the exterior of your home, but also your belongings and sometimes includes personal liability. HO-2 forms cover all of the same perils in an HO-1 policy, plus:

  • Weight from Ice or Sleet
  • AC Freezing and Other Household Systems That Freeze
  • Accidental Cracking, Bulging, Tearing Apart from Pipes & Other Household Systems
  • Accidental Damages Caused From Artificial Electrical Currents
  • Accidental Overflow of Water or Steam
HO-3 - Special Form
Most common type of homeowners insurance policy due to its broad range of coverage and affordability. Includes the same forms as the HO-2 policy, but doesn’t limit coverage to only the named perils. These are great because they typically allow more financial coverage unless named as an exclusion.

HO-3 policies cover not just your home but also structures that are attached such as garages, decks, your personal belongings/assets and even your personal liability.

HO-4 - Rental Insurance
An insurance policy that is intended for renters because coverage is limited to belongings and personal liability rather than the structure of the building which the landlord or property owner usually buys.

The belongings are usually covered against the same perils that are covered in the HO-2 Broad form policy.

HO-5 - Comprehensive
Comprehensive form policies covers more perils than other policies and, like HO-3 policies, are considered open-peril forms. These cover against all perils that are not specifically excused in writing.

Rental Insurance

Rental insurance protects your valuables like TVs, jewelry, furniture and other items in your home, as well as, liabilities, and potentially living expenses in case of a loss. Renters insurance is there to cover you if you rent an apartment, house, condo or even subletting. If you rent a place the landlord’s policy doesn’t usually cover your personal property which is when renter’s insurance comes in hand. Since rental insurance covers you from any loss due to fire, theft, or other events this will cover what it costs to replace your personal items, so it is important to make sure you get the right amount of coverage. Again, renter’s insurance does not cover any things considered acts of god like tornados, floods etc. but you do have an option to buy additional coverage for those losses.
Renters Insurance Liability Protection covers you as the homeowner in case someone was to get hurt in your home. It also protects you from any damage done by a renter, their family, or pets. It is also important to include no-fault medical coverage so that in case someone was to get injured they would submit their medical bills right to the insurance company, avoiding a personal lawsuit.

Last there is also ALE coverage which stands for Additional living expenses, this provides you coverage financially that can help you pay for hotel, food, or other living expenses if something were to happen to the place you rented. ALE covers your living expenses while you are away just remember there are limits on the amounts and time for ALE payments.
